oc. Degree and am a qualified Attorney and Conveyancer. I worked in the retail industry, as a plumber’s mate, in the entertainment industry, the legal profession, the hotel industry, the broadcasting industry and for the Departments of Justice and Housing before becoming a politician so I have a fairly broad experience of commercial and social life in South Africa. I am an emotionally secure, gentle-natured person who is self-motivated and approachable to people from all walks of life. I am forthright, honest and have a good reputation of fostering and maintaining good relationships in all my dealings. I believe in hard work, passion and persistence in all I do, and this has proved effective as I have almost always yielded good results for doing so. I am a quiet extrovert who has no problem with being a public speaker; this is evident in my history of holding positions which require the confidence to address people either individually or in small and large groups. My outlook on life is basically coined in the saying: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes”. To further elaborate, I am an optimist who firmly believes that South Africa has a bright and promising future. Despite the various political affiliations and differences amongst people, the aspirations of all are similar and no matter where on the spectrum one may be, the solution remains the same: education, discipline and diligence. I am strongly opposed to injustice and cruelty and have on many occasions stood up for the prejudiced, without the expectation of reward or recognition. I am a God fearing man who appreciates the simple things in life, to be able to make a difference in society. I have always sought to achieve justice and equal treatment for all; as such I believe I possess the right characteristics to represent the policies, ideals, and aspirations of the people who I represent and who have put their faith in me. I have done extensive work in Local Government. In the Sedibeng District Municipality I was a PR Councillor and Vice Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance caucus from 2006 to 2011. I was also a member of the Section 79 Petitions Management Committee. I am a firm believer in Inter Governmental Relationships. As Speaker of the house in the Midvaal Local Municipality from 2011 to date, I have been instrumental in ensuring that the Midvaal Local Municipality partakes in IGR fora with the other local municipalities and the Sedibeng District Municipality as well as at Provincial and National levels, to engender and maintain sound inter governmental relationships to be able to address the needs of the community effectively and efficiently. I have a history of conducting people-centered work, as an attorney and a politician, this has given me a solid foundation, as it means I have better than average knowledge of South African legislation and have many years of experience in applying it. I am influential and not easily intimidated, however I do acknowledge general ethics of integrity and respect for other people in all political parties. I have sound political judgment and have learnt to master the skill of chairing meetings and maintaining control but also being liberal in allowing democratic discourse to take place without fear or prejudice. Over the years I have gained the skilful art of good negotiation, and consider it an attribute that ensures confidence in one’s ability to non-aggressively assert ones standpoint. This also allows one to make a positive impact on the lives of others, and to help people in conflict to reach peaceful and sustainable solutions. I make it my business to listen to the community’s needs and do my best to resolve their issues. As a leader, I’ve been blessed with the ability to work energetically under pressure. I aspire to work in good faith in all that I do. I am an ambassador of positive change, and an instrument of peace. I believe the world should stand on three pillars: Justice, Truth and Peace. My name is Alan Ross McLoughlin. I was born in what is now called Harare, Zimbabwe in 1953. When I was 8 years old my parents moved to South Africa and I have been a nationalized citizen ever since.
